JANUARY 10, 2024

BY; VELMA ADHIAMBO, COMMUNITY HEALTH OFFICER, HEDSO, KENYA

Greetings, 2024! HEDSO?s stride into the New Year filled with endless possibilities and opportunities; we’re embracing 2024 with a powerful initiative aimed at uplifting our communities. Recently, we commenced a Training of Trainers program focusing on Economic Empowerment. This was aimed to arm our peer mentors with the necessary skills to guide their groups towards financial independence, believing that an empowered community is a healthy one.

What is economic empowerment?

It’s the ability to make informed decisions and take charge of financial resources. At its core lies financial literacy, the foundation for mastering the art of acquiring and utilizing money wisely. Through entrepreneurship, individuals can create employment opportunities and generate decent incomes and employment.

Our approach to economic empowerment comprises five key elements.

  1. Training –Equipping individuals with essential skills and knowledge.
  2. Mentorship –Providing guidance and support through experienced mentors.
  3. Coaching – Offering personalized guidance to navigate challenges and seize opportunities.
  4. Linkages (Public-Private Partnership)- Creating connections for collaborative success.
  5. Combined Socio-Economic Approaches CSEA -Incorporating various strategies like counseling, eradicating gender-based violence, focusing on key populations, and advocating for formal education.

The recent Training of Trainers session has equipped our trainers to step into the role of mentors, coaches, and educators.? Our mission focuses on empowering teenage mothers support groups, emphasizing on economic empowerment.

Why are these sessions crucial for teenage mothers?

?They equip these young women with indispensable skills necessary for securing employment or initiating their businesses. The training encompasses financial literacy, vocational skills, and entrepreneurship education, all aimed at bolstering their self-sufficiency. Economic independence becomes a tool to break the cycle of poverty, enabling these mothers to support both themselves and their children. Moreover, it allows them to contribute positively to their communities’ economic growth.

Beyond just skills, this training fosters confidence and empowerment. It empowers these young women to navigate obstacles and seize opportunities effectively. By investing in their economic empowerment, we’re not just changing individual lives; we’re shaping the future of communities.

In conclusion, economic empowerment goes beyond financial gains. It’s about fostering resilience, independence, and a sense of capability. By investing in the economic empowerment of teen mothers, we’re sowing the seeds for a brighter and more prosperous future for all.
