The full name for Trans*Alliance is the Trans*Alliance Western Kenya Intersex, Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming network. Based in Western Kenya it exists to build socio-cultural support networks among Intersex, Transgender and Gender Non-Confirming (ITGNC) persons. This is done with the aim of growing meaningful involvement of ITGNC persons to voice their concerns and to strengthen their capacity. This may inspire organisational learning that is strategic, authentic, visible and ITGNC-led. Project
The Society, Law & Culture project is an effort by Trans*Alliance to recruit a Legal Office representative from, and directly managed by key ITGNC groups in Kisumu, Kisii, Bungoma, Eldoret, Busia and Kakamega - all towns in Western Kenya. At the start of the project is a baseline survey to identify the knowledge gaps relating to violence, legal status, gender-affirming care, sexual and reproductive health and rights and legal rights of ITGNC Kenyans. Building from that flows a guidance document which forms the basis to carry out sensitisation training to mainstream state and non-state actors including civil society organisations and lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) peer leaders. The guidance document entails elements relating to the law, their equal rights and responsibilities as citizens, community advocacy opportunities and strategies, as well as security reviews and assessments. This project is an innovative translational law project using the law for programme development and provision of an enabling environment for ITGNC communities and their allies. This helps to leverage their capacities to analyse and use evidence for advocacy at local, regional and national levels.
