Importance of Celebrating International Mother Language Day

International Mother Language Day is often observed globally every 21st day of February. This day advocates for nations to maintain linguistic diversity and promote the dissemination of mother tongues and cultural traditions across the globe.

To mark this year’s celebrations, the Advocacy Accelerator together with the Voice Global Communications Hub supported Voice Partners in Kenya and Cambodia to host a webinar. The webinar discussed the importance of this day to indigenous communities and ethnic minorities in both countries.

The panellists included Sok Socheat , Executive Director of Cambodia of Indigenous People Culture Care’s Organisation , Noung Sam Oeung, Executive Director of The Conserve Indigenous Peoples Languages Organisation (CIPL) and Jennifer Koinante, Executive Director of Yiaku Laikipia Trust.

Jeniffer Koinante, was interviewed after the webinar. Here’s what she had to say.
